After consulting with the Pittsburgh St. Vincent de Paul Society and the SFC SVdP Conference, it has been determined for the better to remove the donation receptacles that are currently on the grounds of Saint Frances Cabrini Church.
The intention of having the receptacles was for people to deposit clothing donations in them; but sadly, they and the area that surrounds them have become a dumping spot for people who wish to get rid of their trash and junk. Not only has this inconsiderate activity created an eyesore and a hazard, but it also poses problems for the SVdP crews that pick up the bins. Additionally, these workers are not permitted to take anything left outside the receptacles. In turn, our parish maintenance staff is left to remove the improperly discarded items and place them in the parish dumpsters, which can lead to further disposal issues/costs.
While the current situation presents challenges, revisiting the possibility of reinstating the receptacles in the future remains open in recognition of their value to individuals who depend on donated clothing. In the meantime, the understanding and cooperation of our parish community is appreciated as a solution that aligns with our shared goals of service and stewardship continues to be persued.
