The Liturgy of the Word for Children is a separate liturgy that adapts the Gospel message in a way that enables the children of the parish to better understand what is proclaimed at that particular Mass.
All children present at the Mass are invited by the celebrant to come forward after the Opening Prayer, before the Liturgy of the Word to hear the Word proclaimed in an age appropriate language. (Registration is not required.) They are then lead by adult volunteers to one another space (a classroom or social hall) to hear their 'liturgy of the word' taken from The Children's Lectionary.
The adult leaders and student helpers proclaim the Word to the little ones and lead them in a discussion and reflection on the Word of God just presented. Afterward, the children rejoin their families at Mass during the Preparation of the Gifts, just in time for the Liturgy of the Eucharist..
The Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a sensitive way to allow children to participate in the formal worship experience of the community; to form them in the liturgical language of the Church; to nourish and guide their spiritual growth; and to immerse them in the Word in ways they are better able to understand.

To be an adult leader you merely need to have a love for children and a desire to share the Catholic Faith with them. Students in grades 7 thru 12 may also serve as helpers who assist in keeping the children listening and on task. They may also be asked to read the scriptures to the children. Leaders and helpers are scheduled on a rotating basis. New volunteer leaders and helpers are always welcome.
