The Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ, in previous years recognized as the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary and also known as Candlemas, is a Christian holiday commemorating the presentation of Jesus at the Temple as based upon the account in Luke 2:22–40. It symbolizes the coming of light.
The Presentation proclaims Christ as the Light Who came into this world to dispel sin and darkness. The name Candlemas refers to the custom, that began at least before the 7th century, of blessing and distributing candles. The candles to be used in church are blessed at this time; the parishioners were invited to bring their own candles to be blessed and then taken home for use during prayer time.
The Virgin Mary, in obedience to Jewish law, along with Joseph, went to the Temple in Jerusalem to be purified 40 days after giving birth to Jesus as well as to present Him, her firstborn, to God.
A Candlelight Mass will be offered on Friday, February 2, 2024 at 6:30PM in the Church of St. Frances Cabrini. All are welcome to bring candles to be blessed and then used at home throughout the year.
