…assist the presider and other ministers throughout the liturgy, developing their sense of participation in parish life. Altar servers are selected from volunteer candidates and, after a period of formation, are scheduled to serve at Masses, funerals, weddings and special liturgies. Periodically, servers receive additional training to review the actions related to a variety of liturgical services at which an altar server participation may be required.
Servers are expected to perform their duties in a sincere and reverent manner. Their attentiveness to the words and actions of the Mass will help assure that the liturgy will unfold in a smooth and prayerful manner for all. They carry the cross and the processional candles; hold the book for the presiding priest when he is not at the altar; carry the thurible and censer; present the bread, wine, and water to the priest during the preparation of the gifts; assist him when he receives the gifts from the people; assists the celebrant as he washes his hands within the offering of Mass, and helps the priest and deacon as necessary.
Servers who are about to begin or are already in high school are encouraged to continue in their service to God and His people. New altar servers are trained at various times throughout the year.
